Central Montana Railroad
|
The 2004 Montana Adventure covers two scenic railroads through
the heart and history of the Big Sky State. On Thursday, April
29th and Friday, April 30th we will motorcar the Central Montana
Railroad in the scenic Judith Basin near Lewistown in the heart
of Montana. Constructed by the Milwaukee Road between 1913 and
1915, it is what's left of its Northern Montana Division now operated
by shortline CMR. We'll spend two days covering the 180 mile roundtrip
including a Thursday evening run where its difficult to see a
light in any direction except that from the car in front of you.
Four tall bridges, Sage Creek Tunnel, the Surprise Creek Loop,
2.0% grades, beautiful mountains, wide open spaces, wildlife and
a motorcar friendly railroad are the hallmarks of CMR.
On Saturday May 1 we will trailer our motorcars Denton to Anaconda,
MT. Along the way we can watch rural BNSF action along the line
of the historic Montana Central Ry constructed in 1887-88. On
Sunday May 2nd we will motorcar the historic Rarus Railway between
Anaconda and Butte. Constructed in 1894 as the Butte, Anaconda
& Pacific Ry, it operated until 1980 as an ore hauler connecting
the copper mines in Butte with the smelter in Anaconda. Electrified
in 1912, it operated as such until the smelter closed in 1980
at which time the railroad was sold and reorganized as Rarus Railway.
We will begin our day with a tour of the magnificent Anaconda
roundhouse which was built in 1896 and is still in use with all
of its equipment. When we're done, we'll motorcar the 25 miles
to Butte through the heart of scenic Silver Bow Canyon to "The
Richest Hill on Earth." We'll lunch in Butte, and if time
permits, we will tour the historic Northern Pacific Railroad depot
which is in the process of being restored. We'll finish with a
return run to Anaconda. The combined round-trip mileage for the
two railroads is approximately 230 miles. The cost of the Montana
Adventure is $185.00, or you may do either day's run for $100.00.
Send all checks to the meet coordinator, but make them out to
PRO. NARCOA insurance, Operator's Certificate, PRO membership
and motorcars with all of the NARCOA safety items are required
including spark arrestors. No refunds after April 20th.

Orangeville-Brampton
Railway
|
Track Motorcars Of Ontario is pleased to announce a companion excursion
to Ken Annett's Saturday Tillsonburg run, and one of my favorites.
We'll run from the yard in Orangeville out through field and forest,
over rivers and through the centres of two golf courses until we
wind down through the Forks of the Credit River gorge and the Caledon
Hills; over the very high trestle; probably stopping by the ruins
of the old mill in the gorge; then on past horse ranches and vistas
to the little village of Inglewood where we'll probably stop for
coffee at the general store. Depending on time (and inclination)
we may continue on down to the Brampton diamond - although the scenery
and road crossings below Inglewood aren't to my specific liking
- or we may return to the gorge for lunch and wading in the river
above the falls. Bring your own picnic lunch, mini BBQ or whatever.
This is intended to be a mellow, laid back, uncrowded, motorcar
event. With good weather you should go home saying, "That was
one good day."
The Orangeville-Brampton Railway wants a total of $60.00 per car.
We'll spread the $50.00 U.S. NARCOA insurance cost and any other
minor administration amount equally over those who show up, in addition
to the RR's cost, and collect it in the morning during inspection.
We'll aim to head out about 9:00 a.m. so we'll set on around 8:00.
Lemme know if you're coming, because we should probably limit it
to twenty or so, and I'll send you directions on how to get there.
We'll probably run the line until everyone goes home or around suppertime
although our congenial railroad host Engineer Steve Bradley says
he'll stay as long as we want. He was even looking into running
the engine as our escort. I doubt it but we'll see. Lemme know.
